Answering your FAQs about the Handshake home feed

Privacy settings, hiding content, and more common questions: answered

We’re so excited that you’re a part of Handshake’s content community! Even if you’re eager to start creating content on Handshake’s new home feed and have started brainstorming what to post, you may still have questions. Below, read answers to the most common questions we’ve heard from student and alumni creators.

Editor's note: Building a thriving community takes time and careful planning. To ensure we do it right, we're slowing rolling out the ability to post on Handshake. If you're interested in being an early adopter and creating content for your peers, please fill out this form to be considered for early access!

1. Who can see my posts?

Right now, only fellow students and alumni from your institution can see your posts. Eventually, our home feed will be visible to all community members—students and alumni from schools all across the Handshake network.

2. Can I record and edit videos on Handshake?

As an early adopter, you’re in a unique position to access Handshake’s content and community features as we continue to perfect our platform’s features. For now, you cannot record or edit video content on Handshake; we recommend using free editing platforms (like Capcut) to help bring your vision to life. Once your video is ready, check out this how-to for posting content on the home feed.

3. Why should I post on Handshake?

Handshake allows you to share your own career journey story while also benefiting from community support that can give you a leg up in your career. Your posts in our new home feed not only have the potential to demonstrate your talents to prospective employers, but can also help you build your personal and professional brand as a thought leader who is driven, knowledgeable, and motivated to positively influence their community.

4. How can posting help me land a job?

Posting content on Handshake’s home feed isn’t a substitute for applications or networking, but it can certainly help get you noticed! By posting valuable content to Handshake, you can establish yourself as a young leader in your industry or area of study. Your content can serve as a tangible representation of your strengths that goes far beyond the basics on your resume—after all, your Handshake content can make great portfolio material that demonstrates skills like video editing, communication, and more. Check out this inspiration to get started!

5. What if I see content I don’t like?

You can hide content you don’t want to see by selecting the three dots icon in the upper right hand corner of a post, then choosing whether to “hide” content that’s not right for you or “report” inappropriate, unsafe, or otherwise concerning material.
